As an Artist…
… I have grappled with the agony Sylvia Plath describes so eloquently: “I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited.”
This feral want has been the driver of my innate maximalism: as I’ve gotten more comfortable with my voice and vision, I have accepted the fact that being a jack of all trades does not necessarily make one a master of none.
Outside of my work as an editor, I am a writer, poet, essayist, and write articles and reviews on pop culture, identity, mental health, music, film, and of course, books. I am also a musician and cinephile, as well as create art in multiple mediums. My hundreds of publications, which include 3 collections of poetry, essays, and art, have won awards and been shortlisted for others, and I have enjoyed facilitating discussions, interviewing other creatives, and participating in panels and readings. I work in French, English and Wolof, and have studied Spanish and Japanese, among other languages.
I am currently editing drafts for multiple projects, as well as putting the finishing touches on an album. When not creating, I am still making: I have a fondness for middle-of-the-night baking, for knitting and cross-stitching, for gaming, and for watercolor.
I am always ready to talk about anything creative, as well as hyper-specific subjects like ghost stories, green tea, the history or rock music, stop-motion animation, and how best to ruin your Sims’ lives. As a self-proclaimed sea witch, a perfect day involves rain, reading, and consulting with tarot/oracle decks for inspiration and insight.
